Experiencing God While Facing Opposition: Lessons from Acts 4

Yet, the Bible reminds us that experiencing God does not mean a life free from obstacles. In fact, some of the deepest encounters with God happen when we face opposition head-on.
Main Point: Opposition is Inevitable, But God is Present
Acts 4:23-31 gives us a powerful model for experiencing God in the midst of adversity. After Peter and John are threatened for preaching the gospel, they return to their community and pray together. Their response teaches us three crucial truths:

Expect Opposition: Following Jesus does not exempt us from trouble. Jesus Himself warned, “If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you” (John 15:20). When you step out in faith, resistance often intensifies—not because God has abandoned you, but because you are moving in the direction the enemy fears most.

Respond With Prayer and Community: The early church didn’t isolate themselves or respond with panic. Instead, they gathered together, lifting their voices in prayer. They began by focusing on God’s sovereignty and power, not the size of their problem. Praying together, they found encouragement, strength, and perspective.

Pray for Boldness, Not Just Relief: Rather than asking God to remove their challenges, the believers prayed for boldness to remain faithful and continue their mission. God answered by filling them with the Holy Spirit and empowering them to speak the Word boldly.

Opposition is not a sign that God has left you; it’s often evidence that you are exactly where you need to be. Like the early church, you can experience God’s presence and power most deeply when you face difficulties with faith, prayer, and community. The same Holy Spirit who empowered the first believers is available to you today.

Heavenly Father,
Thank You that You are sovereign over every challenge I face. Help me not to shrink back in fear, but to stand firm in faith. Fill me with Your Spirit and give me boldness to speak and live for You, no matter what opposition comes my way.
