Abide in Christ: What Comes Out When Life Squeezes You?
What happens when life puts you under pressure? When you cut open a lemon and squeeze it, you get lemon juice. Squeeze an orange, and orange juice flows out. But what about you? When life opens you up and applies the squeeze—through bad news, wrong turns, or unexpected tragedy—what comes out?
This isn't just a hypothetical question. It's the heart of what Jesus wanted His disciples to understand before they faced the most crushing moment of their lives: watching Him die on a cross.
The True Vine: Relationship Over Religion
In John 15, Jesus uses a farming illustration His followers would have immediately recognized. "I am the true vine," He declares, "and my Father is the gardener." The disciples knew about vineyards. They understood cultivation, pruning, and harvest. But Jesus wasn't just talking about agriculture—He was revealing something revolutionary about spiritual life.
The vine imagery would have reminded them of Israel's identity as God's chosen people. But Jesus adds a crucial word: true. He's saying that real connection to God doesn't come through religious performance or ethnic identity. It comes through Him alone.
Here's the game-changer: God created you for relationship, not religion. Before He asks you to do anything for Him, He invites you to be with Him. Think about it—the first invitation in Scripture wasn't to work for God, but to walk with God. Adam walked with God in the garden. The disciples were called to follow Jesus, to be with Him daily.
Fruit Comes From Connection, Not Performance
Jesus makes a startling statement in verse 5: "Apart from me you can do nothing." Not some things. Not a few things. Nothing.
That's humbling, isn't it? All our church attendance, our giving, our ministry efforts—apart from Jesus, they accomplish exactly zero in God's economy. But here's the beautiful flip side: when we stay connected to Christ, we will produce fruit. Not might. Not maybe. Will.
The branch doesn't struggle to produce fruit. It simply stays connected to the vine, and life flows through it naturally. The fruit is just evidence of the connection. In the same way, joy, peace, faithfulness, and ministry effectiveness all flow from one source: abiding in Jesus.
When God Prunes, He's Preparing
Jesus also talks about pruning—and let's be honest, pruning hurts. God often removes comfort, self-reliance, distractions, and false securities from our lives. But He's not angry. He's a loving gardener who sees what you can become.
The pruning season is often the preparation season for what God's about to do in your life. So instead of asking "Why is God allowing this?" try asking "What is God producing in me through this?"
What Does Your Fruit Look Like?
Here's the ultimate test: Does the fruit of your life look like Jesus? When life squeezes you, do people see Christ's joy, peace, and patience—or frustration, isolation, and bitterness?
Jesus says in verse 8 that God is glorified when we produce much fruit and prove to be His disciples. The fruit doesn't reflect us or our church—it reflects Jesus.
Your Next Step: Ask yourself honestly—am I spending time with God out of duty or delight? Is my relationship with Him growing? What has God already told me to do that I haven't obeyed yet?
Don't wait to deepen your connection with Christ. The Christian life isn't about trying harder or doing more. It's about abiding in Jesus daily, letting His life flow through you, and watching Him produce fruit that glorifies God.
Prayer: Father, thank You for inviting us into relationship with You. Help us abide in Christ daily, not out of obligation but out of love. Prune away whatever keeps us from bearing fruit that looks like Jesus. When life squeezes us, may Your joy, peace, and faithfulness flow out. We surrender our striving and choose to rest in You.
