He entered the world with no dignity. He would have been known in that culture as a mamzer–a child whose parents are not married. Every culture has a word for this and it carries a shadow of shame. He died with even less dignity: convicted, beaten, bloody, naked, abandoned, once again under the shadow of shame. Though he had no status, no dignity, the very essence of dignity is redefined by his life and forever associated with the cross and the empty tomb.
