Summary

The Book of Judges does not mince words concerning Jephthah. Called a mighty man of valor, he is also the outcast son of a harlot, and those that follow him are called “worthless men.” When the King of Ammon ignored Jephthah’s pleas for peace, the Spirit of the Lord came upon him and gave him a powerful victory. However, unable to accept the Lord’s gracious presence as sufficient, Jephthah made a rash vow, one with tragic consequences for his family, and one that serves as a warning to us.
